Are you on the train to Lousyville? Because the way this weeks weather has been, i’m sure a lot of us are going to be coming down with a cold pretty soon. I woke up with a super sore throat this morning. Only after deciding to post this cold-buster citrus green smoothie up on the blog today.
I think the universe is telling me that I need to drink lots of liquids and start taking preventative measure — enter this citrus green smoothie. It is perfect if you’re already under the weather and need a quick immune system boost to get you up and going again. But it’s also great if you’re not sick and want to make sure you don’t get there. LOADED with healthy baby spinach, greek yogurt for protein, honey and lemon juice for that sore throat, and turmeric and ginger — which happen to be the magical ingredients in this elixir to help nurse you back to life and also to keep you healthy!
The turmeric is added to this recipe to really helps boost your immune system. It not will not only kick your cold to curb, it’ll also help relieve congestion, sore throats, and headaches. Because breathing out of one nostril while your throat aches and your head it pounding is so not fun.
Ginger is the second magic ingredient in this smoothie. It is mainly used to help relieve respiratory discomfort (aka evil phlegm) along with vitamin C which we all know is important when combating a cold.
Speaking of phlegm. The lemon juice/zest in this green smoothie further reduces discomfort. The antibacterial properties in lemons helps fight off throat infections. Goodbye phlegm. You were never a friend of mine.
And finally the honey. Honey is amazing. Not only in terms of flavor but also in how beneficial it is to the body. The high sugar concentration in honey helps destroy bacterial cells<– which means, SAYONARA flu!
Because it tastes good. Yup, you read that right. A smoothie that’s good for you and actually tastes good too. While recipe testing, I was super skeptical. Sure it’s a bunch of ingredients that are going to nurse you back to health/help prevent you from getting sick, but um.. am I really going to drink it if it tastes bad? The answer is no. No matter how good it might be for me, i’m not having it if it doesn’t appeal to my senses. Nopethankyouverymuch.
Luckily it tastes good too. The citrus fruit (lemons and fresh oranges) along with the blood orange yogurt really brighten up this green smoothie and they complement the ginger so well. No funky tastes here.
- 1 (5.3 – 6 ounce) container blood orange greek yogurt (I used Fage)
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice + ½ teaspoon lemon zest
- 2 oranges, peeled
- ¼ teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1 teaspoon grated ginger
- 2 cups packed baby spinach
- ½ cup ice
- honey (optional, I used 1 tablespoon)
- protein powder (optional, as needed)
- Add all the ingredients into a blender and process to desired consistency. Serve immediately.
